Lifecycle Marketing Case Study

Customer Referral Campaign

Building a scalable referral acquisition system that activated high-intent customers at the optimal conversion moment, increasing qualified lead volume while reducing cost per acquisition.

~28% Increase in Referrals
41% Email Open Rate
19% Click-Through Rate
2x Conversion Rate
01

Overview

A lifecycle marketing initiative designed to activate high-intent customers at the optimal conversion moment: immediately following project completion. The campaign established a scalable referral acquisition system that increased qualified lead volume while reducing cost per acquisition.

My Role

As the lead strategist and execution owner, I oversaw the complete referral ecosystem—from webpage development and print design to email automation architecture and messaging strategy. This included behavioral segmentation design, cross-channel integration, and conversion optimization across all customer touchpoints.

02

Problem

Lead generation volume had declined quarter-over-quarter, creating pressure on pipeline growth. Historical data showed that referrals consistently outperformed other lead sources in both qualification rates and close rates, yet no formal system existed to systematically capture them. The opportunity was clear: build infrastructure to convert post-project customer satisfaction into a repeatable acquisition channel.

03

Strategy

The approach centered on timing, incentive design, and behavioral segmentation:

Timing as Leverage

Customers were engaged immediately after project completion—the moment satisfaction peaks and brand advocacy is strongest. This narrow window maximized the likelihood of action before momentum dissipated.

💡

Dual-Motivation Messaging

While the $100 gift card incentive provided clear transactional value, messaging was layered to also appeal to altruism. Behavioral segmentation allowed the system to adapt based on engagement patterns.

🎯

Automated Behavioral Triggers

A multi-touch email sequence used engagement data to determine message priority. Non-openers received urgency-focused resends. Openers who didn't convert received gentle reminder sequences.

04

Execution

Landing Page Development

Built a conversion-optimized referral hub that prioritized clarity over aesthetics. The page structure removed friction: headline reinforced the $100 offer, subhead addressed trust ("Help someone you care about"), form fields were minimal, and social proof was integrated to reduce hesitation.

Print Collateral Design

Designed leave-behind materials styled to visually mimic a $100 bill. The intent was immediate value recognition—customers would associate the physical piece with the reward, increasing recall and reducing the need for lengthy explanation.

Email Automation Journey

Created a three-email lifecycle journey triggered by project completion:

  • Email 1: Lead with the $100 incentive. Clear subject line, single CTA, minimal copy. Designed for immediate action from high-intent customers.
  • Email 2: Sent only to non-openers and non-engagers after 3 days. Messaging pivoted from self-benefit to community benefit—focused on helping a friend access trusted service.
  • Email 3: Delivered one week later to openers who didn't convert. Functioned as a soft reminder with updated social proof.
05

Results

~28% Increase in referral submissions within the first 90 days
41% Average email open rate across the sequence
19% Click-through rate, significantly above industry benchmarks
2x Referral leads converted at approximately 2x the rate of non-referral leads
06

Key Takeaways

Lifecycle timing is strategic leverage

The campaign's success hinged on activation at the right moment. Post-project completion represented the intersection of high satisfaction, recent experience, and peak willingness to advocate—waiting longer would have diluted impact.

Behavioral segmentation improves relevance without increasing complexity

By using engagement signals to determine message strategy, the system delivered personalized experiences at scale. Non-engagers weren't ignored; they were reframed. This approach respected customer intent while maximizing conversion opportunities.

Referral systems require infrastructure, not just incentives

The $100 offer mattered, but it wasn't sufficient. A dedicated landing page, multi-channel touchpoints, and automated follow-up removed friction and ensured the program didn't rely on manual effort to scale.
